Bitterne has had a long-standing link with Southern Sudan, starting with Dr Alan Oakley-John and his wife Gene, who went from Bitterne to work there with the Church Mission Society after Alan retired as a GP in Bitterne.

That link continues with David & Heather Sharland who are at present serving with the Church Mission Society and based in Lui in Southern Sudan.

David spends some of his time teaching the people how to make the best use of what is around them by using local plants as natural medicines and how to become more self-sufficient.

For example David has helped local people to build and maintain fish farms which bring new sources of protein such as Talapia, to begin bee-keeping, and helping to raise dairy goats.

Heather is a trained midwife so besides using this skill teaches better hygiene.

Both David and Heather also hold Bible study groups and travel around the area around Lui holding training courses and teaching about Jesus as well as the practical side of life.

Several people from Bitterne have visited David in Africa. They always extend a warm welcome for friends to their new home which they have built in Lui. David and Heather come back to England every two or three years and we look forward to when they spend some more time with us in Bitterne.
