Church Schools - 200 years of education for all.
Bitterne Church and the two Bitterne primary schools will be marking 200 years of Church Schools with an important exhibition and a service of celebration on Sunday July 3rd at 10.30am.
It's a fascinating story that started in 1811 when the Church of England's 'National Society' set out to provide a school in every parish with the education of the poor in mind, both children and adults. And Religion was placed alongside the other three 'R's - Reading, Writing and 'Rithmetic.
To chart the progress of Church Schools down the years there will be an exhibition - 'Church Schools - 200 years of education for all' - in Bitterne Parish Church from Sunday July 3rd to Friday July 8th.It starts on Sunday 3rd July with a service in Bitterne Church to celebrate this important bicentenary.
The two church schools Bitterne C of E Infant and Junior Schools make this a real local celebration, since they were founded in 1856 and are very much part of the local history of Bitterne.
Local people who attended the schools over the years have contributed photos and artefacts of their own to bring this important national story much more close to home. The exhibition is FREE, it's in Bitterne Parish Church from 3-9 July, and t he exhibition will be open on Monday 4, Tuesday 5, Thursday 7, Friday 8 and Saturday 9 from 10am-12 noon; and Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs & Fri from 3-4pm.
